(CNN) -- Eric Abidal is in the Barcelona squad for their Champions League semifinal second leg against Real Madrid Tuesday, just under seven weeks after having surgery to remove a liver tumor.
Back in March, the French international defender was rushed to hospital for an operation as a routine medical check by his club revealed his problem after he complained of feeling unwell.
His plight stunned his Barcelona teammates, with vice-captain Xavi correctly predicting Abidal would win the battle.
"This is the toughest time I've had at the club, but Abidal will get over it because mentally he's one of the toughest people I know," he told the club's official website on March 16.

Following successful surgery, Abidal was given the medical all-clear and returned to full training Monday evening.
As he took his place on the field, the Barcelona players formed a big circle and applauded him.
He has been immediately included in the 20-man squad for Tuesday's clash at the Nou Camp.
"This is the news of the day," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola told his pre-match press conference.
"'Abi' can't play 90 minutes, he has lost weight. But he is in perfect health and he'll be able to help us.
"His teammates are happy as 'Abi' is back and the people who come to the stadium will see him on the bench -- or maybe even in the warm-up."
The 31-year-old has been capped 55 times by France and plays at left back or in central defense.
Andres Iniesta, who missed the first leg in Madrid, won 2-0 by Barca, also gave Guardiola's men a boost by training normally with the rest of the players.
