Mitch Winehouse: Amy hadn't done drugs in three years

Anderson Cooper snagged an interview with the parents of the late Amy Winehouse, Mitch and Janis, for today's premiere of his new daytime TV show,"Anderson."

In the interview, Mitch informs the silver-haired host that he thinks it wasn't drugs that took the life of his 27-year-old daughter in late July.

"Everybody knows I've been banging on about the fact that she hasn’t taken drugs in three years," he tells Cooper. "Everyone thought I was in denial, I wasn’t in denial, she hadn't taken drugs. Her problem was alcohol, the last few years of her life."

For Mitch, the difference "is that what happened to Amy wasn’t anything to do with drugs. It might be that drugs took its toll in the early years, but there were no drugs in her system. She was prescribed Liprium, which is a normal drug, which is given to people who are detoxing and it kind of decreases the chances of having seizures. She was continuing to take one of those pills everyday."

He went on to reveal that the late singer "had a series of seizures brought on by this binge drinking and then stopping…I think she had a seizure and this was the time when there was no one there to rescue her."

Mitch and Janis say they're speaking out about their daughter's death for many reasons, but primarily so that they can put a spotlight on the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

"I was in New York when I got the news that she passed away," Mitch recalls. "[The] first thing that came into my head was 'Amy Winehouse Foundation.' Children, horses music, all the things she loved. I decided immediately that's the direction we were going."

By giving interviews such as this one with Anderson Cooper, the couple say they're "hoping to raise money for disadvantaged children suffering with drug abuse [and] ill health."

In the meantime, the couple are coping with the passing of their daughter by leaning on the support offered by her fans.

"When we stepped out of the house at one time, people came up to me and they thanked me for having Amy," Janis says. "That’s when I knew, this is something else. To be thanked for giving birth to my child. That's wonderful."
