Hip-hop artist Ja Rule turned himself to begin a two-year prison sentence Wednesday afternoon in New York.
The rapper, whose real names is Jeffrey Atkins, pleaded guilty in December to attempted criminal possession of a weapon after police found a loaded semi-automatic firearm -- with the serial number scratched off -- hidden in the backseat of his luxury Maybach sedan, according to a statement from the Manhattan's district attorney. The incident occurred on New York's Upper West Side in July 2007, the statement said.
He will be sent to New York's Rikers Island before being assigned to another facility in upstate New York, said his publicist, Courtney Barnes.
In the months leading up to his surrender date, Atkins has been putting the finishing touches on a new album -- his first in six years -- that is scheduled to be released later this summer, Barnes said.
Atkins has won MTV Video Music Awards, Source Awards, a BET Award, a GQ Man Of The Year Award, an NAACP Image Award, a World Music Award and a Teen Choice Award, according to the publicist's statement. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2001.
In an interview on the TV show "Good Day New York" this month, Atkins said growing up in Queens, he felt almost groomed for prison and knew "a lot" of friends who were locked up.

(CNN) -- The European Union on Wednesday agreed to pay 210 million euros ($307 million) to farmers who suffered losses due to the E.coli outbreak that has killed at least 25 people, mostly in Germany.
The figure is up considerably from the 150 million euros EU agriculture officials proposed Tuesday, and Dacion Ciolos, the EU's agriculture commissioner, said that figure may change again.
"This envelope will enable us to respond to the compensation requests for the period from the 26th of May through to the end of June," Ciolos said. "We will then take stock of the situation and see whether we need to adjust these figures."
Farmers in several European countries are seeking to be paid back for losses they suffered after being wrongly blamed for the outbreak. Farmers who grow cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and lettuce will be eligible to receive up to 50 percent of the average market price they would have received, based on figures from 2008-2010, the EU said.

(CNN) -- Forces loyal to embattled Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi launched a new attack on the rebel-held city of Misrata on Wednesday, with anti-government forces reporting intense shelling from three sides of the city.
Thousands of government troops attacked around 6 a.m. (11 p.m. Tuesday ET), with 13 rebels reported dead by evening. Mohamed Mokhtar, a rebel fighter wounded in Wednesday's fighting, accused government troops of infiltrating rebel lines in cars bearing rebel flags.
Dr. Khaled Abu Falgha, a spokesman for Misrata's Hekma hospital, said it was the bloodiest day in a week in the besieged city. More than 1,000 people are believed to have been killed since the fighting began there in February, including 686 registered residents of the city, he said.
Rebel fighters returning from the front lines reported that their defenses were holding up under the onslaught, however.
The assault followed a day of intense bombardment of Libya's capital by the NATO alliance, which intervened in the conflict in March under a U.N. mandate to protect civilians as Gadhafi tried to crush the revolt against him. Libya's government said 60 missiles struck the capital city, killing at least 31 people, including a number of civilians, and wounding dozens more.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen reiterated Wednesday that the alliance is doing all it can to avoid civilian casualties. But he told reporters from allied headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, that NATO could continue the airstrikes "for as long as it takes to bring this crisis to an early conclusion."
Rasmussen said NATO bombing has saved lives in Libya, and that the alliance has the resources to extend its military mission for another 90 days past the end of June.
It is time to start planning for what to do after Gadhafi's departure "because Gadhafi's reign of terror is coming to an end," he said.
Pressed by reporters on why airstrikes would be able to dislodge Gadhafi when "the history of the last 30 years" shows that air attacks alone do not win wars, Rasmussen offered no clear answer, saying only, "We have no intentions to put troops on the ground."
For his part, even as NATO airstrikes bombarded his Tripoli compound, Gadhafi vowed Tuesday that "we will not surrender."
"I am now speaking as planes and bombs fall around me," Gadhafi said in a live audio broadcast on state television. "But my soul is in God's hand. We will not think about death or life. We will think about the call of duty."
The Gadhafi compound was under "intensive continuous bombardment," according to state TV, which reported buildings and infrastructure were destroyed. But government spokesman Musa Ibrahim said the allied campaign "is failing miserably."
"No one has the right to shape Libya's future except for Libyans," he said.
Ibrahim said Tuesday's morning blasts hit the popular guard compound and the revolution compound, which are military barracks near Gadhafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound. The spokesman said attacks Tuesday and Wednesday hit state television buildings, killing two people and wounding 16.

(CNN) -- Conquering the Apple Store apparently wasn't enough for these ninjas.
"Fruit Ninja," the simple but addictive mobile game that has lived among the top 10 iPhone apps (trailing only "Angry Birds" in popularity) since it debuted last spring is coming to Kinect, Microsoft's motion-control system for the Xbox.
And these stealthy martial artists are launching an assault on "FarmVille" soon, too, with plans for Facebook app.
The moves mark a new phase in the rise of social gaming, which has brought in millions of nontraditional gamers (i.e. younger, older and female players) via Facebook and mobile phones. Compare this crowd with traditional gamers who tend to play games on living room consoles such as the Xbox or PlayStation.
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Halfbrick, the makers of "Fruit Ninja," showed off preview versions of both new games.
Video games are art -- deal with it
Halfbrick spokesman Phil Larsen said Kinect, which reads a person's body movements, was a natural fit for a game where players use a sword to slash through flying watermelons, bananas and other edible targets.
"We knew we could do it well for Kinect," he said. "We knew we could take advantage of the technology."
At an E3 demo, players were able to use both hands to slash -- karate-chop style -- at the flying fruit on a big screen in front of them.
"Fruit Ninja Kinect" will be the only Kinect title among five games that will be added to the Xbox Live Arcade as part of a summer promotion in the coming weeks. Larsen said it will probably sell for about $10.

Developers were covetous of the casual gamers that have adopted the Kinect for its family and party-style games. But they also hope to attract the more serious Xbox 360 players who spend most of their time on hardcore titles.
"It's almost a little bit of an escape," Larsen said. "They spend five hours playing 'Call of Duty,' then they say 'Hey, I can play this for a little while and relax.' "
The Facebook version, "Fruit Ninja Frenzy," is expected to be available in the next few weeks.
In the mode of "FarmVille" and other Facebook games, it will be free to play while offering extras for a small fee.
Duncan Curtis, executive producer of the game, thinks "Fruit Ninja" could topple perennial Facebook staples such as "Bejeweled Blitz."
"I think it's the best arcade game (for a venue like Facebook) that's ever existed," he said. "We have 3 year olds to 100 year olds who play 'Fruit Ninja.' "
He said players will be able to link to a new, free Apple Store version of "Fruit Ninja Frenzy" so they can continue their play between the desktop and their phones or tablet computers.

(CNN) -- Germany made it seven wins out of seven with a comfortable victory over Azerbaijan to put themselves on the brink of qualification for Euro 2012.
Goals from Mesut Ozil, Mario Gomez and Andre Schurrle helped Joachim Loew's side to a 3-1 triumph in Baku as they moved 11 points clear in qualifying Group A.
It would take an unlikely series of events for them to be caught by second placed Turkey, who have a game in hand on their rivals.
Real Madrid midfielder Ozil was first to find the net, collecting Benedikt Hoewedes' cross before firing a drive into the corner.
Ozil was the architect for Germany's second, as he slid a pass through for Gomez to double the lead.
Azerbaijan managed to pull a goal back in the final minute of the match through Murad Huseynov but Schurrle put the game beyond doubt in injury time.
In Group E, Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a hat-trick forSweden as they thumped Finland 5-0.
Ibrahimovic came on as a substitute in the first half and registered his hat-trick within 22 minutes. Kim Kallstrom and Emir Bajrami added the other goals.
